This morning I woke to an email from my mom:
Hi, Honey.
I was just notified that google reader will be discontinued 7/1. I’m disappointed. What do you think a good alternative will be?
Be well and do good,
Mom
And it’s true! Google Reader is checking out of the Internet July 1st, 2013. Google is venturing to streamline its product offerings (and push us towards Google+). I’ve read my lovely blogs through Google Reader for years and that just sucks. But, there are alternatives.
You could always go with Google+, Bloglovin, Facebook, Email Subscriptions for your favorite blogs. But, if you are a Reader fan the three alternatives that match the look, feel and functionality of Google Reader are Feedly, NewsBlur and The Old Reader.
And, my favorite by far (as of this morning – I know a lot of research went in to that!) is Feedly. Feedly easily transferred over all of my feeds from Google Reader in a hot second. Then I was off discovering the functionality … and of course the aesthetics.
If you are/were using Google Reader, what are you going to use going forward?

I was bummed about this, but I switched over to Feedly in seconds, so I’ve already dried those tears. I gotta have my RSS feeds still.

Isn’t Feedly great!?!? I was amazed at all of the features and twitter & fb integration. Just love it.
Yes, so far I’m really pleased. I just have to get used to using “J” to go to the next article instead of spacebar like in Google Reader

First off, thank you for the Christmas card. I was going through a stack of magazines last night, and a bright red unopened envelope fell to the floor. There were actually three in all by time I went through December’s pile. Yes, things did back up with all I had going on. But it’s calming down – a bit – and I am catching up with dear blog buddies. That’s you! Thanks for the skinny on the readers – I’ll have to choose something soon. Til next time. Love from NYC and me.

I’ve never used google reader and read most of my blogs on my blogger dashboard, so it’s not big news to me.
whatever happen to reading blogs the old fashion way by going directly to the blog? that’s my second most way of reading a blog.
I don’t know about these feed stuff, it’s all confusing to me. i just put up whatever my blogspot blog has and also bloglovin.
I really wish to have that chair and desk and all white them like that. sure would keep me working at home.
have a lovely day.
p.s. I tried out the grident on my blog. I wonder how it looks on your screen. it’s very subtle. thanks again for the tip.

Your gradient is very subtle & sweet just like you! xo
I started using Bloglovin’ today since I already had an account that I wasn’t using, and so far I like it. The ability to see the blogs I’m reading and comment right away as opposed to clicking over to the blog are both big pluses to me. I want to check out Feedly, too, a lot of people seem to like that as well.

Checking out feedly…. Thanks
Thank you so much for this post! I’ve been pretty pee’d off about google reader disappearing from my monitor in a couple of months and was going to start searching for a new reader soon. Feedly looks perfect!
