Varsity Soccer

Both Erin & Brett played soccer as little kids, and oh my that is the cutest thing to see young children chasing a ball on a half field. Brett was the one to stick with the sport throughout the years and now he’s a junior in high school and playing for both the school and a club team. He’s the one in the background of all of these pictures… he was playing with an torn Latissimus Dorsi (the big middle side back muscle thnig-a-ma-jig) so was not 100%, he is forever tearing, ripping, bruising and doing something to himself.

The rest of the pictures are here and they are really great… as soon as they hit high school the game becomes intensely competitive, not to mention they all become “men” out there on the field. As a group of them run by it sounds like a herd of buffalo stampeding – and that is not an exaggeration!

UNC – Carolina blue is a popular school color choice out here and I never miss a chance to tease him about looking like a gang of Smurfs!

Brett was always on the slight side, skinnier than a string bean and shorter than most of the kids on the team. This past year though he grew by leaps and bounds, broke our bank with the amount of food he continues to eat, and became a man right right in front of our eyes. His voice changed, he passed me in height – leaving me the shortest in the family, and his whole body morphed into something so different than what he was, if you weren’t there to see it, you would have never believed it possible.

Gone forever are these carefree days of (mostly) free soccer games, co-ed teams and an injury free aftermath…

{…sigh}

Success at soccer photos last night!

This referee was a riot.  The parents on the sidelines either loved him or hated him.  I just thought he was hysterical — and he did call a good game, just very animatedly.

I found on my camera a selection tool that takes you through your settings giving you little pictures that explain if you pick this setting you get this or that, you pick which setting you want and move on to the next option.  Genius! (Though I probably won’t remember how to get back to that tool, dang it!) I was able to get some really great shots… until it got dark and then my camera started wonking out on me again.  It must have something to do with the shutter and how long it’s open and Lord only knows why it’s staying open so long during night shots.

A big wet, sloppy thank you to Nat and Jamie for sharing their wisdom on my post.  And to “the other Ree” for sending me an email.  You ladies are lovely!  And last but not least big kisses to my mom for enlisting the help of Nat to come to my rescue… a mother’s love knows no bounds, I love you mom!

My son number 11

Says I hate him.  Because I haven’t been to a soccer game in a couple of weeks.

It couldn’t be because of one of the multitude of parental reasons we all have in our back pocket.  So, instead of listing them here – he heard about them all last night – I’m making a plan to attend the rest of his games for the season.

my kid – JV huddle – 2nd from the right in the orange cleats

It doesn’t matter if it costs $6 to get in to each game, nor that I am eaten alive by the variety of bugs NC has to offer, nor that he likes to stay for the varsity game making it a double round-trip to see him play then come back to get him… oh shoot, ignore my cry baby ways.

Photos stolen from Facebook.  Because I’m that kind of parent.

I love you Brett.  I promise.  Even if you won’t give me a goodbye hug and kiss in the mornings when I drop you off for school.  Even if you call me weird and embarrassing.

World Cup 2010 is coming

Mark your calendars… June 11th to July 11th!

My son lives and breathes soccer. He has plans of becoming a world famous soccer player, having sponsors like Adidas, and living in another country. We keep reminding him he’s 15, sponsored by Mom and Dad, and living under our roof until we tell him differently. It still doesn’t stop him from wearing his soccer gear, practicing, playing, joining teams, living and breathing soccer.  He’s trying out for the high school soccer team in a few weeks and he actually just made a NC Division 2 Classic Team.

This is one of his bedroom walls, trust me when I say they are all covered in soccer “stuff.” But this is the only shot I could get without getting the mess that is a teenager included.

Right now the topic of conversation (when Brett’s in the room) is World Cup. Who’s playing, who’s going, who’s going to win / be eliminated, what team we’re rooting for, etc.

And with this picture by Annie Leibovitz I think World Cup is a “fine” conversation topic.  (Except what is up with USA?  Socks and a t-shirt on his head?  Weird!)

Adidas + Star Wars + Snoop Dogg + Football = Fun Video Ad?

Happy Birthday Brett!

Yay! You finally made it out of tweendom and into your teens! Happy 13th birthday to the best son I ever had!

xoxo
