Have you noticed the one column trend?

FacebookTweetPinGoogle+

Remember when photography blogs were basically the only blogs to utilize a one-column layout? All of that glorious space for their amazing photos. But, now, with the direction technology is taking more and more bloggers are ditching their multi-column layouts for a more streamlined one-column layout THAT LOOKS AMAZING ON A TABLET (think iPads.)

I recently did a post on what is the right layout for your blog and laid out the different possibilities, but even with all of those options – are new designs trending to a one-column layout for all blogs?

The hugely popular Decor8 just got a makeover and went to a one-column layout…

new trend tablet layouts one column

So gorgeous!

Also, some other blogs of note who made the leap to one-column, tablet friendly layouts are:

  • XO Sarah
  • Elembee
  • Lovely Indeed
  • and, Aeolidia

What do you think, is this a fad or the way it’s going to be? Would you consider a one-column layout?

I’m not going to lie, my trigger finger is itching to make the jump!

I love it; some a lot more than others. I’ve always been a fan of simple minimalist designs but I think most people have to weigh that against the business side of things – ads, publicity badges etc.

BUT, I confess I’m itching to try it too. I think I’ll play with it on my other (baby) blog and see how it looks. The aesthetics is irresistible with the right colors. Aeolidia is my favorite out of all the ones you showcased

Gah! Cocorrina designed her header and elements! I saw that in my feeder and thought it was gorgeous.

I am not a fan of one column to be honest. I know the theme she has is from Solo Pine. It’s really gorgeous and all but I have to have a sidebar. I’ll see how I feel in a couple of months. I always change my mind and design like I change my underwear.

the one-column layout is my favorite layout, if I could, I would do that for my blog but it’s not quite possible, I can only have one too many items in my header – I used to have a 2-column header but that only works with short blog names.

the blogs you’ve listed aren’t really one-column, not really as they do have multi-column menus or content options, I suppose they would look different on a tablet but since I have no tablet, I cannot tell.

also, have you notice people are leaning toward a more white palette? every blog looks good in white, at least I think so.

    have a lovely day.

I’m not currently a fan and I’m not certain if I would ever make the leap or not. Honestly, of the bloggers you’ve mentioned I follow 2 of them and I love their blogs less now b/c I have such a strong dislike for one-column content blogs (photo blogs are amazing!). If they become immensely popular (and needed for mobile users) I’d consider it but I definitely don’t like them.

Thanks for sharing our blog, Carrie! There is so much content on our site that it was important for us to keep the blog clean, clean, clean, so we dropped as much clutter as we could stand to. Now it’s gorgeous on a tablet and a smartphone. I’m glad you like it!

I prefer side columns on the computer screen but one column on the phone. And I suddenly realised that I do most of my blog reading on the phone now and wondered how many other people do that too. I have a blogger blog and they just brought out some lovely new templates… so I’ve done it, I’ve gone to one column with a click out side bar 🙂 And I love it!
